Old-school chopped pork, new-school whole hog, and serious brisket.

The route

  1. 01Picnic
  2. 02Dampf Good BBQ
  3. 03The Pit
  4. 04Prime Barbecue

One day: Picnic and The Pit, or Dampf Good and Prime. Save a third stop for another trip.

Before you go

  • This is a driving guide. Durham, Cary, downtown Raleigh, and Knightdale are separate destinations, not a neighborhood stroll.
  • Weekends and lunch hours draw lines; verify hours and sellout updates before leaving.
  • Downtown Raleigh parking is easiest in a deck. Cary and Knightdale stops are simpler by car.
  • For a more traditional Raleigh detour, add Clyde Cooper’s chopped pork.

These stops sit on different sides of the Triangle. Bring a car. I visited each to taste how the metro straddles North Carolina’s two historic traditions: eastern whole hog with a fine chop and peppery vinegar, and Texas-leaning brisket with personal pit stories in between.

Pick one or two stops in a day. Save a third for another trip, share plates if you push farther, and leave time to talk with the people tending the fire.

01

Durham

Picnic

1647 Cole Mill Rd, Durham, NC 27705

Wed–Mon 11am–8pm

About 15 mi to the next stop

West of downtown on Cole Mill Road. Picnic’s pasture-raised whole hog is a clean bridge between old technique and a modern neighborhood plate: vinegar heat, careful sides, and a room that fills early for lunch.

Field noteShare a pork plate and save room if you are driving to another stop later. Street parking turns over slowly at peak lunch.

6800 Good Hope Church Rd, Cary, NC 27519

Wed 11am–4:30pm · Thu–Fri 11am–7pm · Sat 11am–6pm

About 13 mi to the next stop

Park at Phillips Farms and queue at the food truck. Oak-smoked prime brisket and towering beef ribs are sold by the weight, Texas meat-market style, with picnic tables outside for seating.

Field notePair this after an eastern pork stop for the clearest Texas contrast on the loop.

03

Raleigh

The Pit

328 W Davie St, Raleigh, NC 27601

Sun–Thu 11am–10pm · Fri–Sat 11am–11pm

About 9.4 mi to the next stop

A Warehouse District dining room in a restored meatpacking building, and the easiest sit-down pause among these stops. Eastern-style whole hog anchors a broader Southern menu when you want a longer break between drives.

Field noteUse a downtown deck for parking. A natural dinner stop if you ate lunch in Durham or Cary earlier.

04

Knightdale

Prime Barbecue

403 Knightdale Station Run, Knightdale, NC 27545

Tue–Sat From 11am until sellout

Christopher Prieto’s Knightdale smokehouse puts Carolina whole hog beside brisket, sausages, and flavors drawn from his Puerto Rican heritage. Bring a table that wants to compare plates side by side.

Field noteOrder across the menu (pork, brisket, and a sausage) so the table can taste how the pit balances Carolina and Texas technique.
